Innovative Startups: The Italian Way
These are all innovative startups supported by the Italian Government with special policies and regimes. For a company to qualify as an innovative startup, at least 15% of their expenses need to be on R&D, it has to have at least one founder with a PhD degree or two founders with master’s degrees; and the company needs to own registered intellectual property.
These innovative startups are often founded in university techno parks with seed capital from publicly and privately supported incubation centres. They build monetisation schemes and profit models to transfer their IP from academic sphere to the market.
Italy has the perfect climate for unicorns to thrive with its design, industry and academic prowess. However, the Italian Government provides fertiliser with policies like free company incorporation and registration in Chamber of Commerce, as well as lenient tax regime and flexible labour and social security schemes. Furthermore, Italian industry (automotive, fashion, construction materials, furniture, lighting, etc.) follow up on the technological advancements of these new startups, integrating some of the new solutions to their production and work processes. Italian Trade Agency supports these startups by organizing a series of international events.
